Adam’s Rib?

February 1, 2007 at 6:03 am | Posted in Atheism, Beliefs, Religion | 13 Comments

I’m not into religion (as you know if you’ve read my previous posts), I don’t know a whole lot about it, though there are things you just can’t help hearing about.  One of those is about how Adam created Eve from one of his ribs.

This absolutely cannot be true, because if this were possible you know every male out there would be doing it.  Probably to the point where you guys would look really funny, kind of all smooshed up because you’d have no ribs left.  The irony would be how unattractive you’d now be to the women you made because well…you have no ribs!

Oh I know this is going to just piss off a bunch of people, so let me just keep on blaspheming away.  You know that story of Mary and the ‘virgin’ birth.  You know what I think really happened is that Mary got herself knocked up and knew she’d be in a heap of trouble (since this happened before the morning after pill became available).  To avoid some major unpleasantness Mary came up with this incredible story about how god impregnated her and this not being the information age, people tended to be more gullible so her story was widely accepted without question.  I’ll bet every teenaged girl who has found herself unexpectedly pregnant wishes she’d thought of this first.

No offense, but it’s obvious that if you ever actually did read Genesis chapter 2, you weren’t paying very close attention. It was GOD that made Eve from Adam’s rib, not Adam himself, who was unconcious at the time. You version of the story strikes me as being a tad painful for Adam. I can only imagine what it feels like to tear out one’s own rib.

Once again, you weren’t paying attention to the story. Joseph either didn’t know or didn’t believe his fiance Mary about her miraculous pregnency, as he intended to secretly dump her, rather than have her be stoned to death or whatever the punishment for fornication was at the time. It was Joseph himself who received a divine communication in a dream that either informed him, or convinced him that Mary’s pregnancy wasn’t the result of her having an affair.

  3. abyssalleviathin, you are almost right. As I mentioned I don’t know a lot about religion and it’s not that I wasn’t paying attention, it’s just that from the little bits I heard I wasn’t interested in reading more fairy tales and as I got older my tastes in fiction were a bit more sophisticated. So I stand corrected, but still unconvinced.

And by the way you think it would have been painful for Adam to rip out his own rib, but, what, god used a general anesthetic?

  4. Almost. 😀 The bible says that God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. It doesn’t say how, but you never know…

  5. About Adam.
If God is all powerful, why couldn’t He? It’s rediculous that a man could remove one of his ribs and create a whole woman, but why couldn’t an all knowing all powerful God?

But as for the “Virgin Birth…”
Again, if there really is an all powerful God, why couldn’t He? And if the virgin who gave birth wasn’t really a virgin, Joseph would have known that on the wedding night and would have disproved the Gospels when they were written. He would have also divorced Mary.
Also, in a Jewish wedding cremony of that time, they man and woman weren’t considered married until the groom showed the father of the bride the blood on the bed sheets. Once that happened the couple went off and did their thing and then the wedding guests partied.

  6. just a quick one, did you know that your rib is the only bone in your body that can regrow if taken out carefully (leaving the outer membrane) they do it for a source of bone in surgery quite often because it grows back without bad effects..

  8. fredericthewise,
Yes I’m aware of that under the right conditions that human ribs will regenerate, so will the human liver. And your point is?

  9. Surely, honjii you could see the point in my post above.

I was simply indicating that the evidence is consistent with what the bible says.

If God designed and made Adam, surely he would know what parts of the body could be taken out without permanent damage. Its just indicative of how the bible is being consistently falsified by many evidences within nature.
