Gabrielle Giffords, Democratic nominee and gen...

This morning, in Tucson, AZ, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, while holding a public event in a Safeway parking lot, was shot in the head.  It’s being reported that thirteen others were also shot, five of whom, including a nine year old girl and federal judge, John Roll, have reportedly died.  Others remain in serious and critical condition.  According to the news a gunman walked up to Ms. Giffords, pointed a gun at her head and shot her at very close range, then began shooting at others in attendance.  The news is unfolding as I write, and the reports are conflicting so none of the numbers have been confirmed.  It was originally reported that Ms. Giffords had died.

It was just confirmed that Ms. Giffords is out of surgery and is expected to recover, to what extent is yet to be seen.  I sincerely hopes she makes a full recovery.  I’m in a state of shock, the kind of shock I felt on  9/11.   Ms. Giffords has been one of the most accessible congress members I have ever seen in Arizona.  She holds public events quite often because she is truly interested in her constituency.   Even though I do not live in her district, she has responded to me personally on a several occasions  when I contacted her.

I live out in the boonies (what might, in Australia, be referred to as the outback) and travel to Tucson (the nearest big city) frequently because where I live there are only four stores and most of what a person needs to live cannot be found in them.  While in Tucson, during the election campaign, I saw that Gifford’s opponent, Jesse Kelley had posted hateful signs, all over town, with lies, intended to instill fear, of Gabrielle Giffords, obviously intended to scare people into voting for him; that made it apparent to me he had NOTHING to offer and there would be no good reason to vote for him.  It took some work to figure out that it was Kelley who posted the signs because he had his name in teeny tiny, very light colored print at the bottom of the signs; for a person driving by in a car it would be impossible to read.  Kelley, it seems, is, among other things, a coward.  I parked my car and had to get very close to the signs in order to read his name.

I get some of the Tucson TV stations and Kelley’s campaign ads were nothing more than vicious, fear mongering, attacks on Giffords.  When I heard him speak he came off as an arrogant, sleazy, douche bag.  Perhaps he has some culpability in this shooting, by having engaged in what so many politicians on the right have done, foment hate.  Their statements fall, not only on the ears of reasonable people who might simply roll our eyes and try to make them go away with our votes.  They are either not smart enough or do not care that their statements and campaign signs also are seen and heard by people who are unbalanced.

Sarah Palin, the biggest hypocrite ever posted the following:

My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona.

On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.

– Sarah Palin

I find this interesting since Palin has a map with members of congress in her crosshairs, which for a gun enthusiast like Palin, could only be the crosshairs one see’s when looking through the scope of a gun in order to take accurate aim.  Maybe Palin should also share in the responsibility since as you  can see, Giffords in one of those in Palin’s crosshairs.  I doubt the sincerity of Palin’s above statement.  I imgagine what she is probably thinking, or telling Todd, is more along the lines of, one down sixteen to go.

What happened today is a senseless tragedy, but not too surprising or even unexpected when you have despicable idiots like Kelley, Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, various tea-partiers, just to name a few who don’t bother to engage their brains (assuming they posses them) before putting their mouths in gear.  It’s true, we have freedom of speech, but  with freedom comes responsibility, and that responsibility should be taken more seriously when you have a public forum in which to speak.  When you constantly preach hate something like today’s tragedy is bound to happen sooner or later.  Are you guys all happy and smug and patting yourselves on the back today?  Are you calling each other with congratulations?  Don’t tell me I’m cynical and that even these people are not that bad.  Sorry I’m not convinced and I wouldn’t be surprised if, while publicly condemning this act, they are, in fact, pleased.

I have been writing this post while watching news coverage over the last several hours and it has come out that the shooter was a twenty two year old male, Jared Loughner.  The news has aired writings taken from his YouTube, and Facebook pages; he is clearly unbalanced.  The type of individual that might not need any outside motivation to commit such a heinous act, or might have been egged on by the constant barrage of hateful talk we have heard over the last few years.  Such an individual might harbor such thoughts and fantasies and sit on the fence about actually acting on them, but the result of continuously hearing the kind of talk I refer to above might serve as reinforcement to such a deranged individual, that violence is the right thing to do.

  2. How quickly did the wing-nuts start labeling the alleged perpetrator a “leftie”? And begin pointing out a single example of the POTUS saying something about knives. As though that excused the thousands of references to violence against the left which those same wing-nuts have written, spoken and videoed over the past few years.

My wish is for the Congresswoman to recover fully and to forgive Palin, Beck, Limbaugh and their ilk for it is certain their God will never forgive them.

    • There has been much criticism, in the last 24 hours, about Palin’s bulls eye map (posted above) which she has reportedly taken down. Palin is claiming those marks are not cross hairs but surveyors marks. Talk about grasping for straws; this sounds like a desperate attempt by one of her “people” to spin it. She’s even dumber than I thought if she, the gun loving, hunter, thinks for a minute anyone is going to believe that while creating the map Palin suggested using surveyor markings. Give me a break!

I’ve seen many surveyors maps, and I have looked through the scope of a gun on several occasions. Those are NOT, surveyors’ marks; they do, however, look an awful lot like what I’ve seen while aiming a gun. I’m not big on guns, nor do I own one, but I have gone skeet and target shooting with friends a couple of times.

  3. everyone is saying the left is trying to politicize this by blaming limbaugh, palin and the like..but i think u are right on…these people preach hate, they scare their ignorant followers, and are dumb f–ks if they couldn’t foresee that at some point they would just reinforce what some nut job to go out and take action like this killer did
